If you are leaving town keep the furnace on and thermostat set to 55 farenheit minimum. Insulate your pipes: Wrapping your pipes in insulation can help keep them warm and prevent them from freezing. You can use foam pipe insulation or electric heat tape to wrap your pipes. Drip your faucets: Letting your faucets drip slightly can help keep water moving through the pipes, which can help prevent them from freezing. Open your cabinets: If you have pipes running through unheated areas of your home, such as your basement or crawl space, open the cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. Rent vs Buy What makes more sense?  If you are staying in a town for work or family or just because you like the location, this is how you know whether it is smarter to Rent or Buy.  There are a number of opinions on the web.  Zillow has an interesting take on it .  They make some assumptions I wouldn't though.  For example their analysis assumes a renter is currently investing their down payment money at 5%.   I like to compare renting which generally covers maintenance, big repairs, sometimes utilities against the cost of owning with a monthly mortgage, property taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance and utilities.
